Rules & Intro 2009

Hello all and welcome to the 2009 edition of Campus-Wide Assassin. I'm Katie, your host again for this year's festivities. With a couple years of experience under my belt, and a little luck, the game should be fun and easy to follow. That being said, please bear in mind that this is a game and I am human, so don't take it too seriously. The whole point is have fun and spread good-natured panic throughout campus. If this sounds like your cup of tea, email tannera@reed.edu with your name and mailbox number and we'll add you to the fun. The deadline to add yourself to the game is Thurs, February 12th. Don't miss out!

If you haven't already done so, please add yourself to the Assassin mailing list ( https://www.lists.reed.edu/mailman/listinfo/assassin) for important updates and news.

So without further ado, here's this year's Assassin:

THE PREMISE:
Kill or be killed. Trust me, the former is a lot more fun.
Each person is assigned a target which they attempt, through cunning use of resources, skill, and a bit of luck, to take out. Once you have eliminated your target, you must take up their assignment, and so on and so forth until you're the last one standing. Sure, it sounds easy, but it's a lot harder when you have to watch your own back besides!

You can keep track of who is playing and who is still alive by checking the "2009 Assassins" entry

Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but...
Do not tell anybody your victim.
It rather defeats the purpose of the game if you tell other people who your target is or make alliances. So please don't.

THE TIMELINE:
Victim assignments and elimination beads (explained below) will be handed out through the mail on Friday, February 13th. The game begins at high noon on February 14th (Valentine's Day) and will continue until there's only one Reedie left standing.

METHODS of ASSASSINATION:
There are two ways to kill your target:

1. Naturally, an assassin must kill their victims with some sort of weapon. Your weapon is a sock. In order to kill someone you must wear a sock on your hand (clean, for Pete's sake!) and tag them while saying, "(Insert first and last name--pronounced relatively correctly), you are dead." The victim is encouraged to make a large spectacle of their death. After the spectacle is over the victim should tell the assassin their new assignment and give them their elimination bead. This means, obviously, that you need to keep your elimination bead with you at all times.

2. Bombs. Bombs are a new, sneaky development. They are sent through the mail, via other people, left in the open, taped on doors, or any other creative method of distribution and consist of a folded piece of paper that says "BOOM! (Insert victim's name here), you're dead." The advantage of this is that you don't need to sneak up on your target, and they can "go off" in a safe zone (whereas the sock method cannot be used in the safe zones). The disadvantage is that they can only kill if they are opened by the intended victim. As always, Honor Principle prevails. If you get a bomb and nobody's around, you still need to report yourself as killed and give your assassin your beads. **NOTE** If you are killed by a bomb, please report this in your email so that I can give your assassin their next target

SAFE ZONES:
Alright, so nobody wants to get caught in the bathroom. And outside is anything BUT assassin-proof. Thus, safe zones have been created. Please use them wisely. Nobody likes the kid who hangs out in the safe-zone only to emerge when everyone else is “dead." Where's the fun in that? As the game progresses, the safe zones will slowly disappear, making it more difficult to escape danger. Watch your emails closely. Every Tuesday evening an announcement will be sent out describing which safe zones have been removed. This change will be in effect starting at noon the next day.

So without further ado, here are your (to be used sparingly) safe-zones:

~Commons (including the cafe)
~The Library
~Academic Buildings (Bio, Chem, etc.)
~Dorm Rooms
~Restrooms (to be counted as safe, both feet must be in)
~Kaul, Theatre
~Sports Center
~Health/Counseling Centre
~On-Campus Jobs (while working them)
~While participating in Reed-Sponsored events* (Gray Fund, basketball, theatre, etc.) *This does not apply to simply attending or watching these events

As of Wed. February 18th:
  • With the exception of classrooms, the Library is no longer safe
  • Excluding the area where you get food and check out, Commons is NOT safe. Once you’ve gotten your food and paid, you’re fair game.
As of Wed. February 25th:
  • With the exception of classrooms, the ETC, Eliot, & Vollum will no longer be safe. Lecture hall counts as classroom.
As of Wed. March 4th:
  • None of Commons is safe
  • Restrooms are no longer safe
As of Wed. March 11th:
  • Unless you're in class, the Sports Center is no longer safe
  • The hallways of the Bio, Chem, Physics, and Psych buildings are no longer safe (classrooms/labs & offices are)
As if Wed. March 25th:
  • Vollum Lecture Hall is no longer safe

BEADS & REPORTING DEATHS

At the beginning of the game, everyone will be given a piece of yarn with a bead on it. You must wear this at all times and it must be visible either on your wrist or worn as a necklace. When you assassinate someone, they must give up all their beads they've collected along with their victim assignment. Thus, as the game progresses it's usually a pretty good indicator of who's ahead (and who you might want to avoid) by the amount of elimination beads they have.

Reporting deaths in a timely fashion is essential to making this game run smoothly. If you kill someone or if you are killed (yes, both of you), please get to a computer ASAP and shoot an email (tannera@reed.edu) so that the list can be updated. This helps everyone see who's still left in the game and lets me know who should be killing who, in case there's some confusion.
